Power Play in Ekiti APC: Fayemi's "No Automatic Ticket" Statement Fuels Tension and Speculation

Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State - Today's outing of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to Isan-Ekiti, the country home of former Governor Kayode Fayemi, has sparked a crisis within the party, evoking mixed reactions. The controversy stems from Fayemi's statement that there would be "no automatic ticket" for anyone seeking election in the ruling APC ahead of the 2026 all-important governorship election and the 2027 State and National Assemblies elections.

Fayemi's statement, seemingly a call for a democratic process within the party, has been perceived as a challenge by those in the camp of Governor Biodun Oyebanji. Many are already calling for calm and unity in the party ahead of the 2026 governorship election. Sources close to the party reveal that Oyebanji's camp views Fayemi's statement as a deliberate attempt to undermine the incumbent's chances of securing an automatic ticket.

"The governor's camp feels betrayed by Fayemi's statement, believing it's a ploy to pave the way for his preferred candidate," a party insider disclosed. Rumors are circulating that Fayemi may contest for the senatorial seat of Ekiti North in the 2027 general elections, currently occupied by Senator Cyril Fasuyi, who was the Director General of Biodun Oyebanji campaign organization during the 2022 governorship election campaign in the State.

As Fayemi controls almost 80% of the party's structure in the State, his "no automatic ticket" pronouncement may jeopardize Oyebanji's chances of getting an automatic ticket for his reelection. The implications of Fayemi's statement are far-reaching, and could lead to a potential showdown between the two camps.

The APC's chances of retaining power in the state may be compromised if the crisis is not managed effectively. As the 2026 governorship election and the 2027 State and National Assemblies elections approaching, the party's leadership must resolve the crisis and present a united front. Fayemi's influence within the party is undeniable and his statement has sent shockwaves throughout the APC ranks in Ekiti State.
