A recent video of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's son, Seyi Tinubu, taking a quarter guard salute has sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians condemning the act as a desecration of the office of the President. The latest criticism comes from Chief Olabode George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and member of the PDP board of trustees.
Chief George berated President Tinubu for assigning an unconstitutional role to his son, calling Seyi Tinubu's actions "disgraceful" and "absolutely irresponsible." He questioned why such a thing would happen in a constitutional democracy, noting that even during military rule, the children of heads of state never took quarter guard salutes.
"I saw a video of Seyi Tinubu taking a quarter guard salute," Chief George said. "Even Baba Obasanjo's son, who is a Brigadier now, never went to represent his father and take a salute. It's unthinkable."
Despite his criticism, Chief George advised Seyi Tinubu to exercise restraint and be cautious of desperate individuals who may push him to do things he cannot defend. Although the Nigeria Army has denied involvement in the quarter guard salute, stating that the men in uniforms in the alleged video were not Nigerian soldiers. Instead a group called Community Auxiliary Development and Effective Transformation Network.
