"Coup" in the House: Tinubu Weighs in on Obasa's Shocking Impeachment

President Bola Tinubu has given his tacit approval to the removal of Hon. Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. This comes after Obasa's impeachment by 32 out of the 40-member Assembly last week, citing alleged infractions including corruption and highhandedness.

In a closed-door meeting in Abuja, President Tinubu met with the Assembly's new leadership, including newly elected Speaker Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda and members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC). Notably absent were Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, and the ousted Speaker Obasa, despite being in Abuja.

Sources reveal that President Tinubu initially expressed dissatisfaction with the impeachment process, likening it to a coup. However, after pleas from GAC leaders and acknowledging Obasa's alleged excesses, Tinubu reluctantly endorsed the Assembly's decision. Speaker Meranda has pledged to prioritize transparency, inclusion, and good governance, ensuring effective delivery of democratic dividends to Lagosians.

Interestingly, Obasa's impeachment comes amidst his rumored plans to join the 2027 Lagos governorship race, alongside other heavyweights like Seyi Tinubu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, and Lagos East Senator Tokunbo Abiru.
