Osinbajo Sets to Review Babangida's Explosive Memoir
Former military dictator, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, is set to launch his autobiography, "A Journey in Service", on February 20, despite concerns about his regime's dark past. The book launch, which will also serve as a fundraising event for the IBB Presidential Library, has sparked controversy, with some critics questioning the timing and content of the memoir.
Babangida's regime, which lasted from 1985 to 1993, was marked by several significant events that shaped Nigeria's history, including the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP), which sparked a nationwide riot, and the unresolved murder of veteran journalist Dele Giwa. The regime's most contentious issue, however, was the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which sparked widespread outrage and protests.
Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has tagged Babangida's memoir as a "journey in falsehood" unless it addresses several unresolved issues from his regime. Sowore demanded accountability, saying that the book must confess to the assassination of Dele Giwa, the murder of Mamman Vatsa, and the theft of $12.5 billion in Gulf oil windfall, among other issues.
Despite the controversy, the book launch is expected to attract several prominent figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who will chair the event, and President Bola Tinubu, who will be the special guest of honor. Former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo will deliver the keynote address, while former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will review the book.
The event will take place at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, and will double as a fundraising effort for the IBB Presidential Library. Other guests expected to attend include former Nigerian leaders Muhammadu Buhari, Yakubu Gowon, Abdulsalami Abubakar, and Goodluck Jonathan.
